ABC News TONIGHT made a trip out to the Missoula Fire Sciences Lab in June with the intent of integrating segments from their interviews into broadcast coverage of extreme wildfire activity over the summer. ABC World News Tonight featured a story on current fire activity, California Wildfire Force New Evacuations, on Sunday, July 26, which included two short interview segments with FFS Research Forester Mark Finney, Missoula. Mark addressed how our scientists study the spread of wildfire and why the longer and more intense fires are harder to stop.
National Public Radio (NPR) is experimenting with new ways of telling stories. NPR’s Jeff Brady’s idea was to create a podcast about environmental and energy related issues. The recently completed pilot episode features FFS Research Forester Mark Finney in a close look at climate change and wildfires. During the podcast, Mark addresses the need for the natural occurrence of fire. Other aspects of fire covered in the podcast include the public’s perception of personal loss and this year’s activity in Alaska and old growth rain forests in Washington.
