In May 2016, FFS Research Ecologists Bob Keane and Russ Parsons, Missoula, visited Manchuria, in northeastern China (. Hosted by Dr. Zhiwei Wu, who spent eight months at the Missoula Fire Lab in 2015, Bob and Russ presented talks on disturbance interactions and analyzing fuel treatments at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Applied Ecology in Shenyang, and at Northeast Normal University’s School of Geographical Sciences in Changchun. Bob and Russ visited a number of experimental facilities and field sites, interacting with graduate students and professors. Highlights included a visit to the Songnen Research Station for Grassland Ecology, one of the last native steppe grasslands areas in China, and to forest research field sites near Changbai Mountain, an exceedingly beautiful volcanic mountain on the border of China and North Korea. The friendship, sincerity and generosity of their Chinese hosts was particularly touching for Bob and Russ.
