Last year’s Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history and destroyed the town of Paradise within the first 6 hours of the fire. To better understand how fires like these spread and how to prevent them in the future, scientists at the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station – Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory in Montana study the behavior of flames in a controlled lab environment to understand why large wildfires burn differently and how factors like fuel sources, temperature, and wind impact their spread.

In this virtual field trip on May 28th at 1pm ET, students will hear from scientists at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory who will perform lab demonstrations of how they study wildfires and answer questions about their research.
