Crowdsourcing is a popular way to raise funds for projects, events, and so on. It is also a great tool for collecting data. In this case, scientists are using crowdsourced data to inform an app they are developing to help firefighters identify the best escape routes. The article, “Wildfire Escape Routes? There’s (Almost) an App for that” in High Country News discusses the effort. FFS Research Mechanical Engineer Bret Butler, Missoula, is a member of the development team. Their research is also published as a paper, “Using Crowdsourced Fitness Tracker Data to Model the Relationship between Slope and Travel Rates” in the journal Applied Geography.
